Cat Food Cost Calculator

Cats are small, but they are fussy, and the food they will actually eat is not always the cheapest one on the shelf. Work out a sensible daily portion and what it costs across a year.

Country

Prices are usually quoted per pound for food and per gallon elsewhere.

Enter weight in pounds.

lb

The price you pay for one pounds of food, before any subscription discount.

$per lb
Age
Activity level

Higher activity means a higher daily energy requirement.

Food type

Wet and raw foods are less energy-dense, so a larger volume is needed for the same calories.

Meals per day

Estimated feeding plan

The estimate uses the standard resting energy requirement formula — 70 × bodyweight in kg to the power of 0.75 — multiplied by a life-stage and activity factor, then converted into a volume of the food type you chose. Calories per kilogram vary between brands, so treat the portion as a starting point.

Daily energy

143 kcal

Metabolisable energy per day

Daily amount

0.1 lb

≈ 0.0 lb per meal

Monthly quantity

2.6 lb

Roughly 0.6 lb per week at dry kibble energy density (37 kcal per 100 g).

Feeding requirements vary. This is an estimate, not a feeding prescription. Body condition, breed, neuter status and health all change what a pet needs. Ask your veterinarian or vet nurse to confirm portion sizes for your individual cat, and check the feeding guide on your food packaging.

How Much Does Cat Food Cost?

Cats eat small amounts, so the price per kilogram matters less than the type of food. Wet food costs noticeably more per day than dry because of its water content, and many owners feed a mix. The calculator prices the portion for the food you actually buy.

Cat Food Cost Per Month

Weight, life stage and lifestyle set the daily energy a cat needs. The calculator converts that to grams of food and multiplies by the days in a month. Indoor cats with low activity need less than active outdoor cats, and neutered adults need less than growing kittens.

Cat Food Cost Per Year

Multiply the monthly figure by twelve. Because cat food portions are small, even a modest saving per week adds up over a cat's lifetime, which can last well over a decade.

Wet vs Dry Cat Food Costs

Dry food is energy-dense and cheaper per day. Wet food adds moisture and variety but costs more. The calculator lets you compare dry, wet, mixed and fresh feeding on the same cat, so you can see the yearly difference before you commit to a routine.

How the calculator works

  1. 1

Enter your cat's weight and age

Kittens need more energy per kilogram of body weight; senior cats usually need less. The weight field accepts pounds or kilograms depending on the country you choose.

  2. 2

    Add lifestyle and food type

An outdoor cat uses more energy than an indoor cat. Dry, wet, mixed and raw foods have very different calorie densities, which changes both the volume and the cost.

  3. 3

    Enter the price you pay

Use the price per pound or per kilogram from your usual order. Multi-buy offers change the effective price, so work it out per unit rather than per tin.

  4. 4

Use the result as a starting point

Cats regulate their intake reasonably well, but free-feeding dry food is a common cause of weight gain. Measured meals make the estimate easier to follow in practice.

What costs are included

Resting energy requirement

The estimate starts from the standard formula of 70 × bodyweight in kg to the power of 0.75, then adjusts for age and activity.

Food energy density

Dry complete food, wet pouches or tins, a mix, or commercially prepared raw food. Each carries a typical metabolisable energy figure per kilogram.

Monthly and annual cost

Calculated at the price you enter, so the result reflects your brand and your retailer rather than a generic product.

Per-meal guidance

A cost per meal alongside the portion per meal, which makes it easier to compare wet food servings against dry food scoops.

Factors that affect the cost

Indoor or outdoor lifestyle

Outdoor cats cover more ground and use more energy. Indoor cats are more prone to weight gain when food is left down all day.

Neuter status

Neutered cats need fewer calories. Many owners continue feeding the same amount afterwards and see steady weight gain.

Wet versus dry

Wet food has more water and fewer calories per gram, so cats eat a larger volume of it. It can help with water intake, which matters for urinary health.

Prescription and veterinary diets

Where a vet has recommended a specific diet, the cost per kilogram is usually higher and the feeding amount is set by the formulation. Follow your vet's instructions rather than a general estimate.

Example: a 4.5 kg indoor adult cat

An illustrative example produced by the calculator's formula, for shape only.

Example: a 4.5 kg indoor adult cat
Body weight4.5 kg / 9.9 lb
Estimated daily energy222 kcal
Daily dry food60 g / 2.1 oz
Monthly quantity1.8 kg / 4.0 lb
Price entered$3.10 per lb
Estimated monthly food cost$12 · annual $149

This is an example only. Feeding requirements vary between individual cats, and wet food would produce a very different monthly figure at a very different volume.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I feed my cat?

Use the daily calorie estimate as a starting point, split across the meals you give. Weigh the food rather than scooping it, at least until you know what a portion looks like. Check the feeding guide on the packaging and ask your vet or vet nurse if your cat needs to gain or lose weight.

How much does cat food cost per month?

It depends on whether the cat eats wet, dry or mixed food and on the brand you buy. Wet food usually costs more per calorie. Enter the price you pay per kilogram or per pound and the calculator converts the daily portion into a monthly and annual figure.

Is dry or wet food better for cats?

Both can be complete and balanced. Wet food contains more water, which some cats benefit from; dry food is convenient, cheaper per calorie and easier to use in puzzle feeders. Many owners feed both. If your cat has a health condition, follow the diet your vet recommends.

Does where I live change what pet ownership costs?

Yes, and often by more than people expect. Rent, boarding, grooming and veterinary fees all vary between regions and between city and rural practices. The country selector changes the currency and the suggested starting figures, but your own postcode is the single biggest influence on the numbers you should type in. If you have a real quote from a local vet, groomer or kennel, use that instead of a suggested figure.

Do kittens cost more to feed?

Per kilogram of body weight, yes. Kittens need more energy and nutrients for growth, and kitten food is formulated accordingly. They usually move onto adult food somewhere around twelve months, later for large breeds.
